The professor explains tool use observed in some animals in two categories: a broad definition and a narrow definition.
First of all, the broad definition defines tool use as anything that is used to carry out a task. For example, elephants use branches to scratch their backs, which means that
they use the branches as tools without any change.
On the other hand, according to the narrow
definition, a tool is something that is changed or adopted from the environment to perform a task.
For instance, in order to catch termites, chimps make tools out of branches by removing the leaves from branches. Actually, they adapt something for specific use.
